Abstract

A Special Issue of the international journal Sustainability under the section Sustainability of Culture et Heritage has been made, entitled Natural Sciences in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. The bridge between science/technology and the humanities (archaeology, anthropology, history of art, and cultural heritage) has formed a well-established interdisciplinary subject with several sub-disciplines; it is growing exponentially, spurred by the fast development of technology in other fields (space exploration, medical, military, and industrial applications). On the other hand, art and culture struggle to survive due to neglect, lack of funding, or the dangers of events such as natural disasters and war. This volume strengthens and exerts the documentation of the sustainability of the issue that arises from the outcome of resulting research and the application of such a duality link. The sustainable dimension emerges from society, education, and economics through the impact of cultural growth, all of which produce a balanced society, in which prosperity, harmony, and development are merged at a sustainable local/regional/national/social level. A wide range of subjects linking the applied natural sciences with archaeology and the cultural heritage of innovative research and applications are presented in this volume.

Abstract

The transformations of society contemporary and particularly those resulting from the revolution which took place on 25 April 1974 were decisive in taking on a new relationship between Portugal and the young African Portuguese speaking countries. A secular history united us, marked by political, economic, social and cultural ties that need to be recontextualized without undermining the exceptional common cultural heritage. In this area, the Anthropological Museum of the University of Coimbra timely recognized the importance of the collection – bibliographic, ethnographic and audio-visual – resulting from the scientific and cultural activity developed by the former Diamang and, at the time (1986), property of the Portuguese Society of Enterprises. […]Motivated by these premises, we formalized the research project «Study of the Cultural Heritage of the former Diamond Company of Angola: a contribution to inter-ethnic dialogue and rapprochement with Portuguese-speaking African Countries», submitted to the National Board of Scientific and Technological Research and by the same body approved at the end of 1987. The main objective of the proposal was to “scientifically investigate and pedagogically value the ex-Diamang's estate”, which should be immediately transferred to the Anthropological Museum of the University of Coimbra, since it was the empirical basis of the studies. planned. Difficulties in implementing the project were decisive in the orientation and objectives of this publication as a research tool, perhaps the first to be considered by the researcher in addressing the estate. This is admittedly a formal survey of the material that, since 1989, been available to the project team, i.e. the collection ethnographic, the core designated audio-visual and important set of reports and memos relating to activities scientific and cultural of the Diamond Company of Angola. This situation justifies the incidence in those, in contrast to the brief note on the bibliographic material, since it was only transferred to Coimbra in 1993. Their size and recognized importance, even at the international level, led us to act immediately in the technical fields of preservation and registration – practice, moreover, followed in the remaining nuclei, according to the specificity of the support materials and state of conservation – delaying, for obvious reasons, the exhaustive publication of the bibliographic catalog. The publication Diamang: A Study of the Cultural Heritage of the former Angolan Diamond Company should therefore be understood as a thematic inventory through which the valuable and sometimes unpublished documentation gathered over the last decades has been methodologically explicit remarkable time of the Portuguese colonial phenomenon. It is, therefore, a complex and multidisciplinary archive of documentary sources, potentially subsidiary to various scientific disciplines, but itself by the nature of prevailing ideology, which may be the object of study. Abstract

This second edition of the multi-volume work goes beyond the comprehensive and systematic coverage of archaeology that appears in the first edition. The field of archaeology continues to grow and the collaborations between archaeologists and researchers in other areas - environmental studies, landscape studies, art history, demography, biomedicine, chemistry, museum specialists, etc. – continue to increase. This second edition builds on the massive collection of information and research from the first edition by adding new entries as well as updating the existing entries. The entries in this encyclopedia range from succinct summaries of specific sites and the scientific aspects of archaeological enquiry to detailed discussions of archaeological concepts, theories and methods, and from investigations into the social, ethical and political dimensions of archaeological practice to biographies of leading archaeologists from throughout the world. The different forms of archaeology are explored, along with the techniques used for each and the challenges, concerns and issues that face archaeologists today. This compendium is both a print reference and an online reference work. A major innovation of the encyclopedia is that it harnesses the capabilities of an online environment, enhancing both the presentation and dissemination of information. Most particularly, the continuous updating allowed by an online environment should ensure that the Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology is a definitive reference work for archaeology and archaeologists. .

Abstract

Abstract

The city of Firenze represents, for the variety of its artistic and architectural heritage, a kind of open-air museum. Works of art and monuments are mainly made of the rocks outcropping in Firenze and in the surrounding areas; indeed, a close link exists between monuments, geographical position of the city and its history. Florence, is characterised by the color of its stone-built cultural heritage, mainly by the warm ochraceous color of the Medieval Pietraforte sandstone and the cerulean grey of the Renaissance Pietra Serena sandstone together with other natural and artificial materials used to complete or cover the stone walls. The web-app Florence RockinArt was created to deepen the knowledge of the stone materials. It is addressed to all those who are interested in discovering the monuments of Florence by carefully observing the stone materials that make up them. The web-app contains short historical notes on the main monuments and detailed geological, mineralogical and petrographic characteristics of the natural and artificial materials of which they are constituted.
